Jan 22nd - In a meeting of the Foreign Investors Association of Albania yesterday, the Head of the European Commission Delegation to Albania, Ambassador Helmuth Lohan, made the following comments: “Politically, 2009 will be a benchmark year for Albania: NATO membership, general elections, the request for EU membership will be some of the outstanding events.
Two major conditions for 2009 to be a successful political year for Albania are spelt out easily: the conduct of free and fair elections held in line with international standards, and the continuation of reforms that enhance the rule of law and demonstrate Albania’s democratic maturity.
In 2009 therefore and in spite of the global economic problems, Albania could make substantial headway in becoming more attractive as a destination for foreign investment, and for doing business in general.
I am sure that the business community has every interest in this development and will support it wherever possible.”
